Introduction

Jim D. Schoonover, Clerk/Administrator of the Village of Hatch, and former Dona Ana County Treasurer, announced that he is seeking the Republican nomination for State Treasurer.

“My decision to run for State Treasurer is from a desire to bring conservative principals to state government.  My first priority as State Treasurer is to work for the people of New Mexico to save our financial future.”

The New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office is in need of someone who will:  1) Safeguard our taxpayers’ dollars while maximizing the rate of return.  2) Make sure all investments are collateralized or insured and backed by the full faith and credit of the United States of America and its agencies; 3) Tighten internal controls, and follow generally accepted accounting principles; 4) Provide a conservative influence on state boards and committees; and 5) Work with the state legislature to change laws and close up loopholes causing the loss of taxpayer dollars.

Schoonover, 48, is happily married to wife, Debbie, for 25 years.  Together they have three sons; all of which have achieved the rank of Eagle with the Boy Scouts of America and have either graduated or are attending NMSU.  He is an active member of University United Methodist Church, Las Cruces.

Jim feels his 27 years of financial experience with NASA, White Sands Missile Range, NMSU, and Dona Ana County, including four years as County Treasurer, along with his degrees from NMSU in Accounting, Management and Human Resources, have prepared him well to serve as State Treasurer.
